Six people died and ten were seriously injured after a car ploughed into a group of carnival revellers in a village of southern Belgium early Sunday morning, the local authorities told a press conference, reported Xinhua.

A judicial inquiry is underway but the authorities said the attack did not appear to have a terrorist motive.

The group, which consisted of 150 to 200 people, had just left a sports hall to head towards the center of the village in the city of La Louviere.

The first assessment also reported 27 slightly injured and nearly 70 people involved.

The occupants of the car have been arrested, according to local police.

The city of La Louviere has launched a municipal emergency plan and a family reception area has been set up.

Belgian King Philippe and Prime Minister Alexander De Croo will go to the village of Strepy-Bracquegnies on Sunday at 4 p.m. to gather with the families of the victims and salute the efforts of the emergency services, said the prime minister's office.
