Germany's state competition authority has announced stricter supervision for Facebook parent Meta, reported dpa.

The Bonn-based Federal Cartel office has classified Meta as a "company with outstanding cross-market importance for competition," meaning that the company will face new rules in Germany.

Under a law passed in early 2021, the regulator can ban practices by companies such as Meta deemed harmful to competition.

The Facebook group will not appeal against the classification in court, according to Federal Cartel Office chief Andreas Mundt.

A Meta spokesperson said: "While we do not share the reasoning that led to the Federal Cartel Office's decision, we remain focused on providing the best possible experience for our users in Germany in compliance with all laws and regulations."
