A train accident on private land in western Germany caused serious property damage on Thursday night, reported dpa.

A local police spokesperson from the nearby city of Bochum said the train had collided with stationary freight wagons while shunting at a container terminal in the city Herne.

The collision caused several containers to fall off the tracks. The train driver was able to jump off his locomotive in time, so no one was injured. There were no dangerous goods in the wagons. The cause of the accident is still unclear.

The incident had nonetheless likely caused "immense property damage", the police spokesperson said.
