The prefecture of French district of Calvados, situated in the northwest of the country, announced that a train struck a car Thursday afternoon, killing three people in the car, while there were no serious injuries on the train.
The collision occurred around 4:00 p.m. due to an "unprotected" condition. The crossing where the accident happened is only marked by signs, without barrier or ring, the French TV channel France-3 said, adding that the train derailed without overturning.
The passengers of the train were evacuated after the accident, according to the same source.
"The train was in full speed at the moment of impact. The windows shattered. We lay down on the ground, thought that an attack happened," one passenger on the train said, cited by the French website Actu.
Several French press said that the three victims were one couple and a child of about ten years old.
