The protesters targeted Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, unfurling a banner from a bridge behind the famous tourist attraction with the slogan "Climate Justice Now.", reported dpa.

Pledges made at all the international climate conferences to date had turned out to be "fairy tales," Hannah Fischer of Koala Collective protest group said, as the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) kicked off in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.

"Neuschwanstein is a symbol of decadence and excessive consumption," she added.

Around 40,000 participants from almost 200 countries are expected at COP27 where they will discuss measures to curb global warming over the coming two weeks.

Bavaria's King Ludwig started building Neuschwanstein palace in 1869 in honour of the composer Richard Wagner. The "fairy tale" castle is today a major tourist attraction.
