German union Verdi to continue postal strike

The trade union Verdi plans to continue its strikes at the German post office Deutsche Post on Saturday, reported dpa.

It has called on parcel and letter delivery workers nationwide to stage all-day work stoppages.

According to Verdi, about 15,000 employees in the letter and parcel centres had already gone on strike for the whole day on Thursday and Friday. According to the post office, this could lead to delays in deliveries for days.

With the strikes, the union wants to increase the pressure on the employers in the current round of collective bargaining.

The union is demanding 15% more pay for about 160,000 employees with a contract term of one year.

Deutsche Post's board rejects the demand as unrealistic.

The negotiations are due to continue in the third round on February 8 and 9. Deutsche Post has announced that it will present an offer then.
