One person died and two others were seriously injured following an explosion Monday in the ArcelorMittal steelworks in the Belgian city of Ghent, local media reported.

VTM news reported that the blast has resulted in one person's death while two other workers were seriously injured and are now in critical condition. There are also reports of an unknown number of missing people.

The explosion occurred around 3:00 p.m. in a silo of the steel company's coke division. Most people present at the scene have been evacuated, and no fire broke out after the blast, according to local firefighters.

The cause of the explosion is technical and lies in the short circuit of a filter, according to some reports.

Due to a significant amount of damage, a medical intervention plan has been triggered. The incident is under control and no toxic fumes have been recorded near the site, said the reports.
