Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic want to take stronger action against irregular migration at their borders, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said on Friday, reported dpa.

The three sides agreed that German police may also patrol the territory of the two neighbouring countries. The goal is to more effectively fight against smugglers and to detect and prevent unauthorized entries.

Faeser had previously presented plans for increased flexible checks at the borders to the two neighbouring countries, and now did not categorically rule out fixed border checks, which have to be applied for from the European Commission.

Germany's opposition is also calling for checks at the borders.

"We want to work together to destroy the cruel business of smuggler gangs that profit from the plight of people and smuggle them across borders at the risk of their lives," Faeser said.

"At the same time, we have to detect and prevent unauthorized entries early on," she continued.

Flexible and mobile checks should prevent smugglers from circumventing the patrols by changing locations, the minister said.
