Man, woman found dead in hotel in Germany

A man and a woman have died in a hotel in the western German city of Mainz, the police said on Friday, reported dpa.

When the two were found in the morning, one person had already died from their injuries. Despite resuscitation attempts at the hotel, the second victim also succumbed to severe injuries.

The background of the crime is still unclear. The police initially did not comment on the nature of the fatal injuries or whether the two victims knew each other.

It remains unclear whether one or more perpetrators are being sought. However, there is no danger to the wider public in the city of Mainz, said a police spokeswoman.

After the discovery of the two victims around 10 am (0800 GMT), a special task force (SEK) searched the hotel in the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital.

The street around the five-storey building was cordoned off.

Police and ambulance vehicles were on site, and evidence was extensively secured.

Around 130 guests were in the hotel at the time of the crime.
