Germans are losing faith in their education system, a study revealed on Wednesday, reported dpa.

Only 49% of respondents rated German education as good or very good, down from 56% in 2020 and 70% in 2018.

The survey, conducted by the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy for the Deutsche Telekom Foundation, said 80% of German residents believe politicians do not sufficiently prioritize education.

More than 90% of respondents agreed that a strong education system is important for Germany's democracy.

According to the survey, only 25% of residents believe that the German education system provides equal educational opportunities for all children, while only 11% think it prepares students well for working life.

The most urgent problems in schools include teacher shortages, the high number of cancelled lessons and the curriculum's relevance for work.

More than 1,000 people across Germany aged 16 and over were surveyed in July.
