Police in the eastern German state of Saxony are investigating manipulated postal ballots submitted during Sunday's state parliamentary election, reported dpa.

Unidentified suspects taped over the actual votes of dozens of people and marked ballots for the fringe far-right extremist Free Saxons party instead, according to police in Dresden.

Election workers in at least two constituencies discovered the manipulated ballots during the counting of votes, according to police.

As things stand, around 100 manipulated ballots in total have been discovered.

The Free Saxons achieved 2.2% in the state election.
