A slim majority of Moldovans have voted in favor of amending the country's constitution to include the goal of joining the European Union (EU), according to the final results of a referendum held alongside the 2024 General Election, reported Xinhua.

With nearly all ballots counted, 50.46 percent of voters supported the constitutional amendment, while 49.54 percent opposed it, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova announced on Monday.

The CEC reported that 1,546,757 voters participated in the election, representing 51.4 percent of registered voters. Of these, 1,488,874 ballots were deemed valid.

Angelica Caraman, president of the CEC, told a briefing that the Commission will submit a report on the election results to the Constitutional Court. The Court is expected to confirm or invalidate the referendum results within ten days.
