Moscow holds no illusions about Donald Trump, who has declared victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, as Washington's ruling elite continues to maintain an anti-Russian agenda, the Russian foreign ministry said Wednesday, reported Xinhua.

"We have no illusions about the elected American president ... and the new composition of the Congress," the ministry said in a statement. "The U.S. ruling political elite, regardless of party affiliation, maintains anti-Russian attitudes and a policy of containing Moscow."

This line remains unchanged regardless of shifts in the U.S. domestic political landscape, whether Washington pursues Trump's "America first" policy or the idea of a "rules-based world order," which the democrats have focused on, the ministry said.

"Russia will work with the new administration ... firmly defending Russian national interests and focusing on achieving all the goals of the special military operation," it added.

Trump declared victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election early Wednesday, as Fox News projected he held 277 Electoral College votes. At least 270 Electoral College votes are needed to clinch the U.S. presidency.
