Two uninvolved women have been killed in the south-western German city of Ludwigsburg in an accident believed to be linked to an alleged car race, reported Xinhua.

Police announced late on Thursday that one of the drivers involved in the crash has been detained, while the other fled the scene.

Two vehicles were allegedly driving at excessive speeds on a road towards a motorway junction, police said.

As the uninvolved women were exiting a petrol station, one of the racing cars collided with their vehicle, causing it to be thrown off the road and wedge between two trees.

The police said that the driver of the vehicle that collided with the two women's vehicle had been provisionally detained by order of the public prosecutor's office.
