A 51-year-old pilot was killed when a small propeller plane crashed into a field near the city of Bonn in western Germany, police said on Friday, reported dpa.

His six-year-old daughter managed to escape the burning wreckage but was seriously injured, police added.

Emergency responders treated the child at the scene before taking her to the hospital. According to police, her condition is not life-threatening.

The aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Hangelar airfield in the late afternoon on Friday.

Police said the plane caught fire and by the time emergency crews arrived, the engine area was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly.

The pilot was found dead in the wreckage.

Investigators have launched an inquiry into the cause of the crash.
