73% Macedonians to vote in favor of EU accession

About 73 percent of Macedonian citizens are in favor of country's joining the European Union (EU), the analysis of public opinion on Macedonia's EU accession process (2014-2017) showed Tuesday.

The comparative analysis prepared by Societas Civilis-Skopje and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation confirmed that Macedonian people's support for accession in EU remained high, although it has been maintaining a declining trend over the last ten years.

"The support is in constant decline i.e. from 80 percent in 2014, it is reduced to 73 percent by end of 2017," Ivan Damjanovski, author of the analysis, said while presenting the results at a conference here.

He noted that the number of euro-skeptic respondents remained approximately the same, around 17 percent.

Thus, he said that 2017 poll showed that 73 percent of citizens would vote in favor if a referendum on Macedonia's EU accession were to be held next week and seventeen percent would vote against, eight percent had no answer and only one percent wouldn't vote.

The 2017 poll was conducted on a sample of 1,100 respondents.
