The local government of the Latvian capital Riga is planning to provide 50,000 euros relief to families that have lost their relatives in the deadly shopping mall fire in the Russian city of Kemerovo.
Riga mayor Nils Usakovs said that a group of councilors came up with the initiative. "Most probably, we will consult the Latvian Red Cross on this. We will give the money to them and they will forward it to the Russian Red Cross which will use the money according to the designated purpose," the Riga mayor explained.
Usakovs said he had already discussed the proposal with several members of the city council, including opposition councilors, and nobody had raised any objections to it.
The allocation for the Kemerovo fire victims' families now has to be approved by the Riga City Council Financial and Administrative Affairs Committee.
At least 64 people lost their lives and more than 80 were injured in a deadly blaze in a shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo last Sunday.
