Three people died after being hit by a train at the Loughborough junction in south London, British Transport Police (BTP) said on Monday.
BTP officers were called to the junction following a report of multiple bodies being found.
"My team are now working hard to understand what happened and how these three people came to lose their life on the railway," BTP Detective Superintendent Gary Richardson said.
Officers were at the scene to identify the victims and make inquiries.
Train services will be delayed until the probe is over.
