A Swiss woman was fined nearly 2,000 euros by Slovenian police for leaving two dogs in an overheated car in the seaside town of Lucija in southwest of Slovenia, the Slovenian Press Agency reported.

The local police were called by a waitress serving the woman, who had left the car in the sun in front of the bar as temperatures were inching into the upper 30s at about 2 p.m.

The woman, 46, was fined 1,905 euros for leaving the dogs in the car and refusing to cooperate with the police on Wednesday, the local police said in a press release on Thursday.

She also verbally abused the police officers and other patrons at the bar, said the police report, after they started urging her to let the dogs out.

The police said that the dogs had been locked in the car for about half an hour. The car windows were lowered somewhat and the dogs were not injured, the police added.

Slovenia is suffering a heat wave, with temperatures well over 30 degrees centigrade in the shade.
