Power has been restored after a power blackout hit Athens, with several districts of the Greek capital and public means of transport affected for hours, Greek authorities said on Wednesday.

A failure in the high-voltage system of a major electricity station north of Athens affected the subway system, traffic lights and buildings in parts of the Greek capital, according to an e-mailed press statement issued by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE).

The issue was resolved and gradually power was being restored, ADMIE said, while the metro lines were already in full operation.

The Fire Brigade received at least 90 calls from citizens who were stranded in elevators.
