Two people were killed in a knife attack in Paris western suburbs of Trappes Thursday, local authorities confirmed.

"Operation is over... The individual neutralized and died. Death toll: two dead and one seriously wounded," tweeted Les Yvelines prefect.

According to news channel BFMTV, the man would have killed his mother and sister in the assault which may be treated as family dispute.

The knife attacker was shot dead by police while he got out from a home where he had been hidden and menaced officers, it added.

The man, born in 1982, has already been on service intelligence radar for radicalization and apologia for terrorism.

"The individual has been neutralized. My first thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones," interior minister Gerard Collomb wrote on his twitter account.

He added police "are investigating to establish the circumstances of this tragedy."

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to some media reports.
