A day after resigning from his prime ministerial duties, Xavier Bettel was appointed by Henri Grand Duke of Luxembourg as head and 'founder' of the newly-formed cabinet, according to an announcement made from the Royal court on Tuesday afternoon.

The announcement and meeting between former PM Bettel and Henri Grand Duke of Luxembourg came after nearly two days of consultations between Luxembourg's mainstream political parties.

In the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, Bettel's Democratic Party, the Green Party and the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party together won 31 seats out of 60, thus giving them a slight majority.

As the three parties expressed their willingness to continue to form an alliance, Henri, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, gave the green light on Tuesday for the formation of a new cabinet.

According to Luxembourg local media reports, the formulation of a new government-wide plan and the allocation of new cabinet positions will be an important part of the next consultation between members of the new ruling coalition.

However, a successful and peaceful distribution of cabinet roles and the making of a new and cohesive plan that is welcomed by each party will likely encounter some hurdles, particularly since the Green Party has seen its share of seats increase by three.

Since the Luxembourg Democratic Party, which has 12 seats in the new parliament, has the most seats out of the three parties, Bettel, former President of the Democratic Party and Prime Minister since 2013, is expected to usher in a new five-year term.

Bettel took on the country's top job in 2013 after a spying scandal involving the secret service toppled the government led by Jean-Claude Juncker, who is now the European Commission president.
