The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) on Thursday strongly recommended that all passengers returning from Russia to Finland get tested for coronavirus 72 hours after arrival in Finland and avoid social contacts until getting the test results.

The THL also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel to Russia, said the THL in a press release.

The recommendations were made following the worsening situation of the coronavirus outbreak in Russia in June.

Transmission rates are growing throughout the country, including large cities such as Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

In St. Petersburg, incidence during 14 days is 240 cases compared to 19 cases in Finland. This means that the risk of being infected with coronavirus in St. Petersburg is much greater than in Finland.

Meanwhile, a total of 60 coronavirus infections were detected among the people who crossed the Russian border via Vaalimaa in the last two days, reported national broadcaster Yle.

Huge rush at the Vaalimaa crossing on Tuesday forced authorities to allow 800 travellers into Finland coronavirus test.

The Vaalimaa border crossing faced rush on Tuesday evening as football fans who travelled to St Petersburg to watch Finland matches in the Euro2020 Championship returned to the country.

“By taking a test, everyone can ensure that they have not been infected with coronavirus on their travels. At the same time, you also significantly reduce the risk of infecting your family and friends”, said THL Director Mika Salminen.

The people can get tested in the municipality where they live or are currently staying. Coronavirus tests are free of charge.
