American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) awarded HUS Heart and Lung Center the Magnet recognition, said the Helsinki-Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS) in a press release on Thursday.

The recognition proves that the quality of nursing, patient safety, and nurses’ job satisfaction in Heart and Lung Center are measured to be excellent both on a national and international level.

The Magnet recognition is awarded to a hospital with high-quality nursing after a thorough evaluation.

The recognition is awarded for four years at a time, and it benefits the patients, nursing staff, and the entire organization.

The nurses working in a Magnet Hospital are committed professionals who are satisfied in their work.

“The Magnet recognition is a remarkable prize to the staff and supervisors for their long-term work on developing patient care and wellbeing at work. It is also a highly significant achievement for Finnish nursing”, said Chief Nursing Officer Virpi Sneck.

The development of nursing in Heart and Lung Center has been evidence-based, and new knowledge and innovations are constantly utilized. The nurses also participate in the decision-making process concerning their work.

The long-term development work is evident in improved results in patient care and patient satisfaction, and also in nurse attraction that has increased for several years already.

“Our achievements also have a financial effect. Complications, such as pressure injuries or healthcare-associated infections cause major costs in addition to physical suffering of the patients. Our nursing has had a significant effect on reducing these complications,” Sneck added.

Patient satisfaction in Heart and Lung Center has been among the highest at HUS for several years.

“The application process alone has increased our nurse attraction and retention. The positive effect is also seen in feedback from the patients”, said Mika Laine, Director of Heart and Lung Center.

Heart and Lung Center is the third hospital in Europe and the second in the Nordic Countries to achieve Magnet recognition.

HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center was awarded the same recognition this spring.
