The nation stopped still at 10:00am on Sunday as people across the country observed a one-minute silence in memory of the victims of Turku Market Square incident.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä from a press conference on Saturday called on the people to observe the silence.

Two people were killed and at least six others were injured when a miscreant wielding a knife attacked people at the Turku city centre on Friday afternoon.

The main gathering was held in Turku with people attending the silence with flowers and candles.

Lutheran Archbishop Kari Mäkinen, Turku City Mayor Aleksi Randell and local police chief Tapio Huttunen gathered at the spot at about 9.30am and laid flowers and candles at the place of occurrence.

They said Turku is still a good, safe place to live and hoped that the lively atmosphere of the Market Square will be restored soon.

Similar commemoration took place at other parts of the country where foreign diplomats, asylum seekers, activists of rights groups, and politicians were present, among others.
