Helsinki Police on Saturday arrested a nurse of the Helsinki-Uusimaa Hospital (HUS) on charges of stealing medicines and drug offence, said police in a press release on Monday.
The 35-year old nurse is suspected of embezzling a significant amount of drugs from the workplace regularly for the last six months.
These drugs are classified as narcotics and police recovered significant number of ampoules of fentanyl and oxynorm from the residence of the nurse. Both the drugs are very powerful painkillers, said police.
Police interrogated the nurse at HUS hospital after getting information about the incident on 18 January.
After the preliminary investigation police arrested the nurse on 22 January.
“We suspect that the nurse has been taking the medicines away regularly since last July. According to current estimation, thousands of ampoules of fentanyl and oxynorm were embezzled,” said Investigative Officer Jari Nikonen.
Police are investigating into the case through interrogations and checking the surveillance cameras to find out detail about the incident.
