Number of marriages declines further in 2021

A total of 19,428 marriages were entered into in 2021, which was 2,654 lower than one year earlier, according to the preliminary data of Statistics Finland.

Out of the marriages, 19,056 took place between opposite-sex couples while 372 between same-sex couples.

Of the same-sex marriages, 264 were between two women and 108 between two men.

As a result of the amendment to the Marriage Act, starting from 1 March 2017, same-sex partners can enter into marriage in Finland.
