Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Monday expressed concern over the decision taken by Taliban imposing ban on women´s work at nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Afghanistan.

Terming the decision as wrong and unjustified, Haavisto said that it will also create risk to worsen the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, said the Foreign Ministry in a twitter post on Monday.

“Disallowing women to work for NGOs is wrong in itself. It also risks worsening the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. Deeply troubled by another set of unjustified actions by Taliban,” said the twitter post, quoting the Foreign Minister as saying.

On Saturday, the Taliban said female NGO employees were not allowed to work because some had not adhered to a strict interpretation of the Islamic dress code for women, reported DW, quoting different news agencies.

The decision is the latest in a string of restrictions that Afghanistan's hardline Islamist rulers have imposed since they seized power in August 2021.

It came less than a week after the Taliban banned women from attending universities.
