Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Saturday expressed shock over the execution of former Iranian deputy defense minister Ali Reza Akbari by the government of Iran and demanded stop of all the death sentences there.

”Again, I am appalled by the carrying out of a death sentence by the government of Iran,” the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on Saturday wrote in a twitter post, quoting Haavisto as saying on the execution of British-Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari.

“These executions must stop immediately. Finland’s stance is clear, we are against death penalty at all times,” the Foreign Minister added.

Iran has executed Akbari after convicting him of spying for the UK, the country's judiciary news agency, Mizan, reported on Saturday.

Earlier in October 2022, Haavisto said that Finland supported the proposed additional sanctions against Iran against the backdrop of human rights violation there.
