Assault cases on rise in Southwest

The Southwestern Finland police recorded approximately 4,700 assault crimes in 2022. The number of assaults has increased by more than 21 percent in the last five years, said police in a press release.

Cases of assaults and violent crimes in general have increased significantly in the area of the Southwest Finland Police Department in recent years.

Whereas during the corona years, asaault cases of assaults were concentrated in homes and other private places, In 2022 the statistics changed and increasingly such cases reported to the police took place in public places.

Last year, Southwestern Finland's police recorded 2,101 cases of assaults in public places, which means almost six assaults every day. The total amount is 17.5 percent more than in 2019 before the corona virus pandemic.

The growth is partly explained by the easing of the corona situation and the opening up of restaurants, nightlife, festivals and other events.
