Scams using Whatsapp reported at many places

A number of incidents of cheating people using Whatsapp application were reported to police at different parts in the country, said police in a press release on Saturday.

The police warned the people to be alert of fraudsters who are reportedly cheating people and obtaining money through the Whatsapp.

A criminal report was filed with Lapland Police on Friday where one person became victim of a Whatsapp message sent by a miscreant in guise of his daughter.

The message said that the phone set of his daughter was damaged resulting arrival of the message from a foreign number.

The message was followed by a request to pay an urgent bill on behalf of the daughter. The person transferred a significant amount of money to the requested account without verifying it.

The money could not be recovered later at it was already transferred to the account.

Similar incidents were reported from different parts in the country on Friday, said police.

The police urged the people to always check the authenticity of any message, even, if it is urgent request for money.

They also advised to treat calls from unknown numbers with caution.
