Teenager killed in Tornio snowmobile accident

A 16-year-old person was killed in a snowmobile accident at Länsipohjankatu area in Tornio, a municipality under Lapland region late Wednesday night, Police said in a press release on Thursday.

The accident took place at about 9:45 pm when a speeding snowmobile collided with a roadside traffic signal post on its way from Länsipohjankatu to Pirkkiönkatu and fell into a nearby pile of snow.

The driver of the snowmobile was injured critically in the accident. The driver was taken to the Oulu University Hospital where the person succumbed to the wounds.

The Police, however, did not divulge the identity of the deceased

After the preliminary investigation police said that the person was driving an unregistered snowmobile and influence of alcohol might have been a reason behind the accident.

The police are investigating into the incident to find out the reason behind the death.
