Prime Minister, Sanna Marin on Wednesday announced that she would not continue as the Chairperson of the Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) after the next party council scheduled for September.
Marin made the announcement from a press conference in the parliament just after three days of the parliamentary polls took place on Sunday where her party secured third place in the close race election with 43 seats.
"It is the time now to make room for a new leader,” said the SDP leader at the press conference, adding that she will not contest for the party Chairpersonship in the next council scheduled to be held in Jyväskylä in September.
Pointing out the exceptional situation in the previous years following the Covid pandemic and ongoing Russia´s invasion of Ukraine, she said that her tenure as a Prime Minister was not easy to run the country.
"Now, when the poll result has been like this, I think that I have the chance to turn a new chapter in my personal life." Marin added.
She, however, aims to participate in the negotiation talks to form the new government but not interested to take over as a minister by herself.
Marin said that the SDP is ready for joining the upcoming government.
She also expressed her gratitude to the people and party leaders and activists for their support while discharging duties as the Prime Minister and party Chairperson.
