10 Finns evacuated from Sudan

Finland has taken initiatives to evacuate Finnish citizens from the conflict-hit Sudan and ten people were evacuated on Sunday night, said Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Monday.

“The evacuation of Finns from Sudan has progressed well during the night. A total of 10 Finns have been evacuated,” Haavisto wrote in a twitter post in Finnish, adding that there were also children among the evacuates.

The Foreign Minister, however, said that there are still few people in Khartoum, who asked for help and initiative is going on to bring them out.

He also termed the situation in Sudan as very difficult and dangerous.

Violent clashes broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces on April 15 in the capital city of Khartoum and other places, dampening hopes for a return to civilian rule.

At least 400 people have been killed since fighting erupted.
