Russia freezes bank accounts of Finnish embassy, consulate

Russia has frozen the bank accounts of the Finnish missions in Moscow and St. Petersburg at the end of last month, source at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirmed on Wednesday.

“The bank accounts of the Embassy of Finland in Moscow and the General consulate of Finland in St. Petersburg were frozen at the end of the April,” Taneli Dobrowolski, Communications Coordinator of the ministry informed Daily Finland by email replying to a query.

Finland communicated with the Russian authority and demanded investigation into the matter, said the ministry official.

“Finland has been in contact with the Russian authorities and demanded an investigation. Finland has demanded Russia to secure Finland´s diplomatic missions local money and payment transactions,” the ministry official added.

The matter of freezing the bank accounts of the Finnish embassy and Consulate General in Russia was first reported by a Finnish language national daily Helsingin Sanomat.
