President Sauli Niinistö on Thursday met with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília and discussed various bilateral and global issues.
The Presidents addressed the geopolitical situation, peace and security, common global challenges, topical regional questions and the bilateral relations between Finland and Brazil.
“Good to visit Brazil. With President Lula, we had a profound discussion on peace and security, the future of the multilateral order, and how to address our common global challenges. The cooperation between Finland and Brazil is growing stronger,” Niinistö wrote in a twitter post after the meeting.
The President also met with President of the Federal Senate Rodrigo Pacheco and President of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, Justice Rosa Weber.
“Wide-ranging talks today (Thursday) with the President of the Federal Senate Rodrigo Pacheco and the President of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, Justice Rosa Weber. We addressed the global political situation, our bilateral relations and judicial systems,” the President wrote in another twitter post.
Niinistö's programme will also include discussions with, among others, Veneziano Vital do Rêgo, First Vice President of the Federal Senate, and Arthur Lira, President of the Chamber of Deputies during his two-day visit, according to a press release issued by the President Office earlier.
On Friday, Niinistö will visit São Paulo, where he will meet Tarcísio de Freitas, Governor of the State of São Paulo, and participate in a business event organised by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo.
The event will also be attended by representatives of Finnish and Brazilian business and industry.
President Niinistö last visited Brazil in 2016 when he attended the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The previous presidential visit from Brazil to Finland was made by President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff in 2015.
