The aspiring presidential candidate Paavo Väyrynen has gathered about 15,000 ‘support cards’ for the upcoming presidential election, reported the local media.
The member of European Parliament has still enough time to garner the 20,000 support cards required to contest the election.
The head of Väyrynen’s presidential campaign, Seppo Hauta-aho pointed out that newspaper campaigns have been instrumental in accumulation of the support cards. Hauta-aho believes the 20,000 threshold will be reached and could even be surpassed by a few thousands.
A presidential candidate nominated via the constituency assembly need to collect 20,000 signatures from registered voters.
Väyrynen, the chair of Kansalaispuolue (Citizen’s Party) earlier in the month revealed that he had collected about 10,000 support cards. The deadline for submission of candidature applications is December 12.
