President Sauli Niinistö and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on Tuesday expressed condolence at the huge casualties of people following the floods in Libya.

“President Niinistö has sent a letter to President of the Presidential Council of Libya Mohamed Yunus al-Menfi expressing his most sincere condolences for the loss of lives caused by the floods in Libya,” said the President Office in a twitter post.

Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen also expressed shock at the deaths of thousands of people in the floods.

“With great sadness I follow the situation in Libya, where thousands of people are feared to be dead as a consequence of the terrible floods. My condolences to the victims and their families,” Valtonen wrote in a twitter post on Tuesday afternoon.

At least 2,300 people were killed and more than 5,000 others went missing in the Libyan city of Derna after heavy floods swept eastern part of the country on Sunday, reported Xinhua, quoting Libya's health ministry on Tuesday.
