Leakage in water pipeline at Mäkkylä in Espoo disrupted water supply at several areas in the capital region, said Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) in a press release late Monday night.
The leak from the main water pipe caused disruption to a widespread water distribution in Espoo, Kauniainen north and east of Turunväylä and in Linnainen, Vantaa.
Although the water pipe leak was isolated and the network pressure is returning to normal, brown iron-containing material may detach from the network due to the disruption, said the authority.
There may also be air in the network, visible in the water as bubbles or a grayish color.
The authority urged the people flushing water until it runs clear.
As a precaution, drinking water and water used for cooking must be boiled, said the HSY, adding that water should be boiled for at least five minutes.
“Water used in coffee and tea makers should also be boiled first. After boiling and cooling, the water is safe to use. The boil water advisory is in effect until further notice, and it will be lifted by the health authorities,” said HSY in the press release.
