The Helsinki detention unit located in Metsälä has become a part of the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) as of January 1, said Migri at the end of last week.
The detention unit has been transferred to Migri from the City of Helsinki, which has been responsible for detention arrangements concerning some foreign nationals since 2002, said Migri in a press release.
The Helsinki detention unit has 40 places for customers and a total of 38 staff.
The change which has taken place at the beginning of 2018 will not affect the unit's operational activities.
There are two detention units in Finland. In addition to the Helsinki detention unit, there is a detention unit in Joutseno which operates as part of the Joutseno reception centre. Both detention units will be run by Migri in the future.
