Elderly man dies after falling through ice in Pori lake

An elderly man died after falling through ice into a lake like seashore in Pori, a municipality in Satakunta region on Friday evening, police said in a press release.

The incident took place when the man went to catch fish in the Pihlavanlahti lake. At certain stage he was drowned into the thin ice of the lake.

Rescue service people received an alarm at about 5:30pm as the man could not be contacted.

Responding to the alarm, Coast Guard personnel together with rescue service people and police rushed to the spot and recovered the body immediately.

The police, however, did not divulge the identity of the deceased.

The reason behind the incident could not be known but police said that the ice was very thin and unpredictable.

The police are investigating into the incident to find out the reason behind the death.

Police also urged the people to be refrained from going to ice without proper equipment and informing the relatives.
