2nd death in Helsinki police custody reported within 2 days

A man died in the detention cell of police at Pasila in Helsinki on Wednesday evening, said police in a press release on Thursday.

It was the second custodial death in the cell at Pasila police within a span of two days.

Earlier on Monday, another man died in the detention cell of police at Pasila in Helsinki.

Police said that body of the man of 20s was found during a regular round of inspection at the cell on Wednesday evening.

The authority tried to resuscitate the man, but the move was not successful.

The police, however, did not divulge detail identity of the deceased. They informed the relatives of the dead about the incident.

Terming the deaths in custody as unfortunate, the Helsinki Police emphasised the importance of investigation into the incidents carefully.

The West Uusimaa police are investigating into the incidents to find out the reason behind the deaths.

The prosecutor office will also probe into the involvement of police in connection with the incident led by Tarmo Tanner, the head of the investigation.

Helsinki police prison is the largest police prison in Finland.
