Child killed in ATV accident in Suomussalmi

An under-school age child was killed in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident at Suomussalmi, a municipality in Kainuu region on Wednesday evening, police said in a press release on Thursday.

The accident took place at about 7:00pm when the ATV with a mother and her two children onboard skidded off and turned turtle in a sports filed at the locality.

The five years and nine years children fell under the vehicle after the accident resulting death of the minor child on the spot.

Responding to an alarm, rescue service people and police rushed to the spot and conducted resuscitation efforts but found the child already dead.

Police said that the ATV was registered as a tractor and none of the three onboard used safety helmet.

The reason behind the accident could not be known immediately.

The Accident Investigation Board and Police are investigating into the incident to find out the circumstances surrounding the accident.
