Chairperson of the main opposition party in the parliament Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) Antti Lindtman said that Finland should officially recognize Palestine as a state as soon as possible, reported a leading Finnish language national daily Helsingin Sanomat on Sunday.

“The government should take action in this regard as soon as this autumn. Everything possible must be done to end the progression of violence,” Lindtman told the Helsingin Sanomat.

He said it is the time for Finland to recognize the Palestinian state to achieve peace in the region.

Referring to the delay in recognising, he also warned that Finland would be at risk to stay on the wrong side of history in recognizing the state of Palestine as more than 140 UN member countries already done this.

Earlier in late May, President Alexander Stubb said that Finland would recognise Palestine as a state at some point in the future.

He also said that Finland supports neither Israel nor Palestine but supports the peace process and a two-state solution.

On May 22, Norway, Ireland and Spain announced that they would officially recognize Palestine as a state.
