There were 252 adoptions in Finland in 2023 and the number was 17 (6%) lower than in 2022, According to Statistics Finland.

The number of adoptions has decreased by 48 per cent since 2010.

Of all adoptions, 138 or 55 per cent were adoptions of persons aged under 18.

The number of adoptions has fallen clearly in the 2010s and 2020s.

One key factor explaining this is the decline in inter-family adoptions.

Adoptions of adults make up an increasing share of adoptions.

Adoptions of persons aged 18 or over made up 45 per cent of all adoptions in 2023, while the share was 20 per cent in 2013.

Out of the adoptions, 65 per cent adopted had been born in Finland.

Two-thirds of adoptions of persons born in Finland were adoptions of adults aged over 18.

Of the adoptions, 86 were adoptions by two parents and 166 were adoptions by one parent.
