Niinistö bags 66.4% votes in advance polling

Advance voting results posted on Sunday showed incumbent president Sauli Niinistö had garnered 64.4 percent of the votes.

The Vihreä liitto (Green League) presidential candidate Pekka Haavisto is second with 11.2 percent.

Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) candidate Laura Huhtasaari and Paavo Väyrynen both garnered over 6 percent of the votes.

Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party of Finland) candidate Matti Vanhanen received 4.5 percent,Tuula Haatainen of Sosialidemokraattinen puolue (Social Democratic Party)got 3.5 percent, Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) candidate Merja Kyllönen received 3.2 percent and Nils Torvalds of Ruotsalainen kansanpuolue (Swedish People's Party) got 1.2 percent.

The streaming of live results of the initial voting results began after 8 pm Sunday. The results showed the incumbent Sauli Niinistö had taken a huge lead.

According to national broadcaster Yle projection, Niinistö will be re-elected by 62.9 percent of the votes.

The turnout of the presidential elections according to local news outlet MTV news was very low, 69.9 percent.

Haavisto acknowledged defeat and congratulated Sauli Niinistö.

"It seems to me that Sauli Niinistö has already won the first round based on the votes cast. I want to congratulate him. It has been strong showing from him," said Haavisto.

Similarly Centre party candidate Vanhanen conceded defeat and congratulated Niinistö.
