Patrol vessel Turva on way to submarine cable damage scene

Finnish Border Guard patrol vessel Turva left Finland for the scene where the submarine cable between Finland and Germany was damaged, said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in a press release on Friday.

The NBI is investigating into the damage caused to the undersea cable C-Lion-1 and as a part of the investigation, patrol vessel Turva is on its way to the scene.

The NBI investigates the damage caused to the cable as aggravated criminal damage and aggravated interference with communications.

Cinia's undersea cable C-Lion-1 between Finland and Germany was cut in the exclusive economic zone of Sweden.

For securing the criminal investigation, the NBI has requested the Border Guard assistance in investigating the crime scene.

“Turva is on the way to the scene, since its capacity is needed in exploring the seabed. On board Turva there are staff from the NBI gathering information on the results of the crime scene investigation,” Tactical Leader, Detective Superintendent Risto Lohi of the NBI said.

Meanwhile, the President and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy on Friday at a meeting discussed the damage to undersea telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea, said an official press release.

The committee observed that it was still too early to assess the cause of the damage.

The damage does not affect network traffic or Finland’s security of supply, said the committee, adding that the matter would be reassessed once further information has been obtained through the investigation.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on November 19 opened an investigation into the damage of submarine cable.

The submarine cable between Finland and Germany went out of service on November 18 morning due to a fault.
