Fiber-optic cable damaged in Southern Finland

A fibre-optic cable was damaged in Southern Finland on Monday reportedly during excavation work, said police on Tuesday.

The fibre optic cable connecting Finland and Sweden is owned by a Swedish digital infrastructure company, GlobalConnect, was damaged at two points in between Espoo and Vihti.

Police said there is no reason to suspect criminal activity in the cable damage incidents.

The police have been investigating the two cable damage incidents reported on Tuesday and the surrounding circumstances.

“There is no suspicion of any criminal offence in either case, as the damages were caused by excavation work. The police will not initiate criminal investigation into either case,” said police in a press release.

Meanwhile, Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne said that, as a rule, data cable damage should always be taken seriously, said the ministry in a press release on Tuesday.

"It is important that we stay calm and find out what has happened. When we know, we can take appropriate action. In order to investigate these situations, it is important that the authorities and cable companies can work closely together. This time, both incidents seem to have been caused by construction work, which can sometimes damage cables," said Ranne.
