SDP MP Kiuru comes under attack in Helsinki

A long-term serving lawmaker of the main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) Krista Kiuru came under attack in Helsinki on Friday afternoon, SDP and police sources said.
The incident took place at about 4:00 p.m. when a middle-aged man suddenly punched Kiuru at her face at Kaisaniemi Park on her way from the parliament building to bring her child from daycare.
The man unknown to Kiuru left the scene immediately after the incident.
Kiuru, Chair of the parliamentary committee on Family Affairs and Social Services and also former Family Affairs and Social Services Minister, visited the emergency department and filed an assault case with police and also informed the security authority of the parliament in this regard.
Police said that the suspect could not be identified yet but they have good descriptions about the suspect.
The police are investigating into the incident and trying to arrest him, said police.
Kiuru in a post on her social media platform Facebook also disclosed the incident and thanked the people for their concern over the assault.
The 50-year-old SDP leader has been serving as MP since 2007.
Meanwhile, President Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and SDP Chair Antti Lindtman in separate posts on their social media platform X strongly condemned the attack on the SDP leader.
