A massive damage occurred in water supply pipeline in Helsinki downtown on Saturday afternoon resulting flood on city roads and disruption in water supply at the locality, said the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY).
The incident took place when main water supply pipeline in Helsinki was broken at an excavation site at Mechelininkatu area shortly after midday.
The walls of the water pipes might release precipitate due to pressure fluctuations and changed in the flow directions of the water, said HSY.
Water supply suspended at Mechelininkatu and Pohjoinen Rautatienkatu areas completely and Leppäsuonkatu area temporarily after the incident.
The water also flooded roads as a result tram service remained suspended at the area for more than two hours.
HSY started the renovation works immediately after the incident and water supply restored at most part of the area.
The authority advised that water should be run from all the taps until it becomes clear again.
HSY also urged the people to file water services’ fault-report, if the water does not become clear after 10 minutes of running the taps.
